These decorative medaillons are made from thin brass sheet, struck with a one-sided die (bracteates). The medaillons are modeled after a find from the cemetery of Villach-Judendorf in Austria, where the originals ornamented a woman's headdress. The cemetery is dated to the 12/13th century.
The originals were made from gilt silver; you can find a picture of them on this website under the menu item "Judendorf bei Villach".
