embroidery stencil "griffin"

This vellum stencil makes it possible to repeatedly transfer a motif onto a cloth background in the same size and configuration. The vellum is laid "prickly" side up on the cloth; then pounced with charcoal or chalk dust so that the design transfers through the holes in the vellum.
Once the motif is transferred, the dots can be joined in an outline using ink and pen (or with a fabric marking pen), then the embroidery can begin.

The griffin motif is punched after a couched gold embroidery dated to the 13th century, probably of German origin, that is part of the collection Bock. The original embroidery is in the V&A museum London. The motif on offer here is about 11 cm long and approximately 8 cm high.
