Texel Stocking Project silk

This yarn was developed for the reconstruction of the stockings found in a shipwreck from the 17th century near Texel in the Netherlands. According to practical research done during the Texel Stocking Project at the TRC Leiden, the stockings were most probably knit with non-degummed silk, then partially or completely de-gummed after knitting and blocked into shape.

This silk is about 440 den thick; one cone has a length of approx 1200 m (about 65 g of silk).

The knitting pattern for the stocking is available via ravelry. One cone of silk will be enough for a single stocking if knit in full size.
