So in case I have gotten you curious about sprang, but you have never really heard about it... let me introduce you to Carol James, who has done an insane amount of sprang in all imaginable shapes, sizes, and colours, and who does a very nice job of explaining holes, patterns, and her notation system (which is also how the Lengberg tree of life pattern is published):
